Christian Drivers

April 7, 2004

Again with the Christian drivers… again with the fish and the Christian radio station bumper stickers, and the weaving in and out of traffic, and the glances outwards and inwards and here and there…

It’s not that I have anything against Christians, on certain days I will indeed think of myself as one… It’s just that without fail, the bad driver, the tail-gater, the weaver, the dodger; they will all have some sort of reference to Christianity on their car… somewhere…

What would Jesus do?
How would Jesus drive?
Would he give me a dirty look as he speeds past me?
How fast is fast enough?
What’s the rush?
Why (always) the rush?
What would Jesus do?

Opening Day…

April 5, 2004

… and I for one am happy. I got digital cable, and am thinking about doing the MLB Extra Innings deal this year. It would be a first, so we’ll see what happens. They have a free preview this week, so I’m recording today’s game while I’m working… then I get to watch Kerry Wood start the 2004 season.

I’m feeling good about the Cubs chances this season, but am just happy about the beginning of the new season… A chance to let 2003 fade into memory, and let the current roster show us what it can do.

Though I’m still bummed about Hee Seop Choi being let go, Derrek Lee seems to have good stuff going for him, and I think he’s a great addition to the infield. I also got to see LaTroy Hawkins throw during spring training, and I like his style. Another great addition, I’m certain.

Quiet.

April 3, 2004

Saturday evening.
Sitting alone.
Quiet.
Almost too much so.
I turn the TV on.
The noise is comfort.
The noise is the sound of voices, speaking.
I turn the TV off.
The sound is comfort.
The sound is silence, speaking.

I’m at a loss for words anymore…
and the state of the union scares me too much
to think about it… scares me too much
to read about it… scares me too much.

The sound of silence is bumpkin spittle platitude…
